J.A. Madden
Founder (Legacy)
J.A. Madden established the foundation of the Madden family enterprise through the creation and development of National Builders Supply and National Butane—two ventures that positioned the family at the intersection of building materials and energy during a period of significant economic expansion in the United States. With a disciplined, entrepreneurial mindset, he identified essential industries that would underpin long-term growth and built businesses designed to meet those fundamental needs with reliability and scale.
Through National Builders Supply, he participated in the distribution and support of construction materials critical to regional development, while National Butane provided access to energy resources at a time when infrastructure and fuel accessibility were rapidly evolving. Together, these businesses formed a complementary platform that reflected both strategic foresight and operational execution.

He operated with a long-term perspective, emphasizing disciplined expansion, strong relationships, and reinvestment into core business lines. His ability to recognize opportunity in foundational industries established a blueprint for diversification and growth that would guide future generations.
The principles he instilled—entrepreneurial initiative, operational discipline, and a focus on essential markets—became the cornerstone of the Madden family enterprise. His legacy is not only reflected in the businesses he built, but in the enduring framework of stewardship and value creation that continues to shape the family’s investment philosophy today.
